Tips For Choosing The Perfect Dog Breed For Your Family

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This

Looking for a new pet for your family can be difficult to do because there are so many choices. But, the truth is that not every dog has a personality suitable to your familys lifestyle. There are actually quite a few things to consider before bringing home a dog and failure to do so could result in disaster for both the dog and your family. Some things to consider include The size of the breed, how good they are around, the amount of exercise they need, the amount of food they will be eating at any given period of time, the ability to locate the desired breed at an affordable cost, and what kind of health issues that could be expected with the dog breed.

The size of the breed or dog is an important thing to consider. If you live in a small apartment you wont want a great dane but if you have a large amount of land and an active lifestyle you might love to have a larger dog. One thing to think about when looking at puppies is that the small little puppy they are holding onto right now could easily grow into the massive giant pet that cant fit in your home.

If you have children, or grandchildren that visit regularly then it is critical you find out if the dog is good with kids. If they have a bad temperament with kids or have been shown to be aggressive with them in the past, then you may need to consider a different breed. Remember that kids can be kind of rough with a dog so If you are considering one of the toy breeds you will have to be sure that you dont let the kids alone with your now dog, especially if he is a puppy, until they can properly learn how to handle small dogs. If you want a dog they can roughhouse with than a larger breed is probably a better choice.

Of course, you will want to take the type and amount of food into consideration as well. A larger dog is going to be much more expensive to feed than a toy poodle, but all in all, dog food isnt really that expensive so this probably shouldnt be a major factor in your decision making.

Locating the pet from a reputable breeder should also be considered. Of course, reputable breeders may charge a slightly higher cost than what they are used to seeing, but that is because they often offer a pedigree or guarantee of health. Beware of puppy mills and make sure the parents of your dog are free from genetic diseases (the breeder should be able to certify this). If you dont want to spend a ton of money then you could consider looking at a rescue shelter for your dog. These dogs are usually very even tempered and make great pets and you can often find pure bred dogs if you have your heart set on a certain breed.

Most breeds are prone to certain diseases so you will want to look into this beforehand so that you have an idea of what problems might crop up. This should also be looked at from a standpoint of future vet bills. Mixed breeds or mutts are usually a lot less prone to diseases that pure breeds are so if you are on a budget, this is another case for rescuing a dog from the shelter.

Adopting a new dog into your family can be a joy, but if it isnt the right dog it can quickly turn to disaster. Make sure you assess your familys lifestyle and try to find a dog whose personality will fit in. If you are a family that loves outdoors, camping, hiking and sports then you will want a dog that likes the same and has the stamina to keep up. On the other hand if your family is more of the video game and movie type then you will want to choose one who is low key and doesnt need a lot of exercise. Making this important decision wisely will insure you adopt a dog that is a perfect companion for you and your family!

Choosing a family pet is something you have to consider very carefully. With all the breeds of dogs available on the market, your options are endless.

The American Kennel Club divides the different breeds in groups that share different characteristics common to all the breeds in the group. The golden Retriever belongs to the Sporting Group.

The Sporting Group Includes some of the oldest and most popular breeds around the world. A lot of these breeds were originally intended for hunting, but most of the dogs are kept as regular family pets who rarely hunt. But, it is because of these traits that some of these breeds are so much fun to have around. Goldens, as their name suggests, are retrievers, and they love fetching a ball, sometimes for what feels like hours. They also have outstanding personalities, and they make wonderful companions.

Goldens are bred for toughness and strength. Don’t let their soft face distract you from their purpose. Even if Goldens love to lay around and playfully wrestle with you on the rug, they are worth their weight in gold in the field.

Goldens tend to be a bit loud and very energetic when they are young. The Golden puppy should have plenty of chew toys around. Remember, puppies aren’t fussy and don’t discriminate. A chair leg or a chew bone are one and the same for them. Goldens are easy to train, very sporty and their personalities are endearing. Their goal is to make you happy. You can find them performing with tails wagging and eyes shining in the obedience, agility, and fly ball arenas. They are also excellent with children.

Their color can either be a very light or a very deep shade of blond. The coat darkens a shade after the first year. They are on average about 24 inches tall at the shoulders, and sometimes females can be a little shorter. Their coat should be long and either flat or wavy. Without proper brushing their coat tends to mat.

So, if your goal is to find a pet that can make a good companion to you and to your kids, Goldens might be just the perfect breed to go with.

Beds For Dogs – Choosing The Perfect One

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This

Dogs always seem to have a smile on their face. Thats probably because they are generally happy animals that possess a contagiously positive attitude. We humans like to keep them around because they love us and dont hold our idiosyncrasies against us. All we must do to keep them satisfied is keep their food and water dishes full and give them a few pats now and then. But why not make your dogs life even more comfortable? Your furry friend likes to sleep just as you do, so you can provide a bed for him that makes his life that little bit nicer. When deciding which bed to buy for your dog, there are a few things to keep in mind.

If you are planning to place the dog bed in a visible part of the house, you will probably want to make sure that it matches the surrounding room. We like our regular furniture to match, so the color scheme of the dog bed should match as well. Just as mismatched chairs and love seats look out of place, so does a dog bed that has clashing colors. It isnt as though your dog is going to complain about the color of the bed, so buy one that goes with the rest of the room. Dog beds come in all sorts of colors, so you will certainly find one that is pleasing to the eye.

Color schemes and aesthetics dont mean anything to your dog, but comfort does. As dogs age, arthritis and other mobility issues begin to rear their ugly heads. You want to keep your dog as comfortable as possible, and there are orthopedic dog beds available that help alleviate pain. Which type of bed you choose also matters. Cuddlers are beds that are quite similar to pillows, but they are raised on three sides. This helps support your dogs body while he or she sleeps. Or, you may choose an actual pillow for a bed. Mats are thinner and flatter than a pillow, but they are often not as expensive. Be sure that whatever style you buy has a removable cover so that you can toss it in the washing machine when it gets dirty.

It might sound like common sense, but you need to consider the size of your dog when buying a bed for it. An adequately sized bed will not only allow the dog to curl up comfortably, but should accommodate him or her if sleeping on the side and stretched out. Obviously, the larger the dog, the larger the bed, and therefore the larger the price tag. Price shouldnt be too much of an issue until you get into the more luxurious cuddlers and sofas.

Dogs, just like their human companions, like to be comfortable when they sleep. It enables a full rest that recharges the batteries, so to speak. The bed you buy for your dog will grant comfort and peace to your canine friend.

Want To Start With Dog Shows? Show Small Dogs!

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This

There’s no business like show business, but dog shows can come close. Ever think you might like to become involved with showing dogs? If your answer is yes, then we suggest you start with small dogs, popularly known as “toy” dogs, as they are easier to maintain and easier to keep around at home than larger breeds.

When dogs of a certain breed enter a dog show, they would be judged by a pre-established standard that would define their eventual success. The winners, or Best of Breed dogs, then compete against each other for Best in Group within one of the seven basic groups to which their breed has been assigned (the Herding Group, Hound Group, Non-Sporting Group, Sporting Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group or Working Group). And when the group champions are determined, they will compete for Best In Show, and maybe earn enough points to win the grand Championship.

Small dogs are a better choice than their bigger counterparts for many reasons, and here are just a few of the major ones that any dog show rookie can benefit from.

Sitting Pretty

First of all, smaller dogs usually are easier to groom and give a bath to before the show begins. You’ll soon find out for yourself that this small detail could mean a lot at the end of the day. You’ll need less grooming agents like soap and shampoo, less water and you’ll have an easier time carrying these small show dogs in and out of the tub. With the exception of long-coated breeds, less dog equals less hair, which equals less drying time. So why groom a Standard Poodle show dog when you can spend the same amount of time taking care of five or six toy-sized show dogs?

Git Along, Little Doggies

The second reason would be because small dogs take up less space, allowing you to breed more dogs for show purposes. You will need to purchase small traveling crates for each dog, but worry not as you can easily carry them around and store them when necessary. Small show dogs also require the use of grooming tables, but as long as they get along, two small show dogs can share one table.

They Aren’t Hard To Handle

Handling a small dog for show is much easier than handling a larger dog, simply because they don’t require much effort. You’ll seldom see small show dog handlers huffing and puffing as they race around the ring. A large dog has much longer limbs, naturally, and would make bigger strides, often making it hard for a handler to keep up with it, unlike small dogs, where all the handler usually has to do is match the dog’s pace. In addition, “setting up” a small dog for viewing is a simple physical task, whereas a larger dog can involve much more effort.

Especially if you’re new in the business, showing small dogs is a much less stressful proposition than showing large dogs. Dog shows are a hobby and a sport that can be very addictive – and glamorous – and showing small dogs is the perfect way to get started on the route to sporting glory.

What Makes The Miniature Pinscher Dog A Great Pet?

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This
by Ned Dagostino

There’s a lot of misinformation floating around about the Miniature Pinscher. Some say this dog breed is annoying, and barks to much. Others will tell you the Min Pin is not good with children. Chances are that these are the same folks saying that Min Pins are simply small Dobermans. Of course owners of this breed know that all of those things are simply wrong.

What the Min Pin really is is an intelligent dog that is extremely loyal and intelligent, and yes, full of energy. It’s no wonder this breed has been given the nickname “The King of the Toys.”

There’s no question that this breed has a bit of an attitude. They are courageous well beyond what their 10 pounds would indicate. They seem to think they weigh much more than that. You’ll notice it in their proud walk with their high steps and head held high as well.

And because they are so loyal, proud and courageous, the Miniature Pinscher makes an excellent watchdog. But those same traits can make them difficult if not trained properly.

A good Min Pin owner quickly establishes himself as the alpha male or female. If this is not done, the dog can become a tyrant, thinking he’s in charge of the household. Early training is a must and it needs to be consistent. You can’t let your dog get away with bad behavior just because he’s so cute. It can be tough sometimes to enforce discipline because of this, but it needs to be done. The good news is that Miniature Pinschers are easy to train because they are highly intelligent.

And once he’s trained you will have everything you could want in a pet. Your Min Pin will be incredibly loyal and loving and simply a joy to be around. These dogs are real comedians and will leave you laughing every time you watch them play.

And while the Miniature Pinscher is certainly not a fragile breed, he does only weigh about 10 pounds. That means that kids can at times have a tendency to play too rough, especially since the Min Pin acts bigger than he is. Children may need to be reminded that the dog is still small.

As for loyalty, the Miniature Pinscher can and will get along with everyone in your family. But they do tend to pick one person to become extremely attached to. You’ll have a hard time finding a more loyal breed.

Because they have so much energy, Miniature Pinschers need plenty of exercise. But the good news is that if you don’t have the energy to keep up, their size means they can get all the exercise they need just running around your apartment or home. They love to play by themselves and if you’re watching, they seem to perform more just for your enjoyment. You can’t help but laugh.

And when play time is over they’ll be happy to sit there right next to you. So if you want a family pet that’s loyal, fun, smart and easy to care for, the Miniature Pinscher may be just the breed you’re looking for.

How To Keep Your Pet Healthy

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This
by Mr. John Sommer, PhD.

Assuming that you are a pet owner and that you probably own either a cat or a dog (as that is what most pet owners do) I am not going to teach you something that you do not know but rather bring your attention to something that you might have forgotten.

* Amount of exercise: Both cats and dogs need physical activity. Movement is vital to any pet and the larger pet the more exercise is needed. That is why dogs will often require more exercise than cats.

* Way to exercise: If your cat is a stay at home cat you will need to take it out into nature. If you live in a big city you must take it for daily walks. All dogs (even the smaller ones) will need at least one daily walk and for larger breeds you need two or three walks a day of at least 30 minutes.

* Don’t spoil: Giving your pet food in excess amounts will be just as harmful for them as it is for you to overeat. The problem is that since they are pets they don’t know that what you’re giving them will actually harm them.

* Vitamins and minerals: Be sure to ask your VET what she recommends that you purchase for your pet. Some pet foods are better than others and you’ll most likely find that you can benefit from finding breed specific products.

* Love: Just like humans a pet will need love from you and from anyone else in your family. Without love a pet will lose the will to live just like a human would. Talk to your pet daily using happy words and make sure to keep a physical contact as well.

* Insure your pet: Every day thousands of pets get hurt by cars and there is nothing we can do about it. But instead of hoping that it’ll never happen to your pet be sure to get an good pet health insurance that will cover everything if bad luck strikes.

* Plan: Make sure you use a schedule for all major appointments. Be sure to note the regular VET check-ups and that your pet gets any medication or vaccines that it’ll need. Small things like these will add up in the long run.

Helpful Hints to Help Dog Behavior Training

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This
by Joe R. Hilliard

When it comes to dog behavior training, beyond the standard house breaking, leash training, and bark and bite training, a dog owner must be prepared to deal with excessive urination when the dog gets excited, controlling whining, and crate training.

The first priority when a new puppy is introduced into the home is house breaking the puppy. This is not something that can be rushed, because the more the issue is pushed, the less results you are likely to see. Designate a certain area for papers, gradually reducing that area as you increase the frequency of trips outside and watch for signs from the puppy. Bladder control is learned over time, and you must be patient.

For leash training, you’ll want to quickly let the dog know that you are in control of the leash, or the puppy will try to take advantage of the situation. When he or she goes to a place you do not want them to go, make sure to gently pull on the leash and speak the command of your choice. It is important that your dog is leash trained with you in control for outdoor and socialization purposes.

The last thing you want to deal with is a dog that barks all time and chews or bites everything. Show the dog that this behavior is unacceptable by allowing him or her to spend time with other, older dogs. This will help because this is a task that nature would have assisted with.

When a dog whines, it is perhaps one of the most annoying sounds for a human. Teaching a dog to control this will help for a better, happier, coexistence as the dog ages. It is a problem that needs to be addressed quickly and handled firmly. Trust the dog to be alone and quiet for short periods of time and reward this before leaving him or her alone for any extended period of time. This is because the whining generally is a result of being away from the family.

The sooner you can get the dog’s whining under control the better for everyone. The dog probably whines because he or she does not want to be away from you, so before you go away for long periods of time be sure to give puppy time to adjust and reward small periods of alone, quiet time before pushing the long ones.

Whining is something dogs love to do and their owners hate to hear. It is usually the result of separation anxiety from the family and his or her loved ones. The way to combat this is to train your dog to be left alone and quiet for short periods of time before leaving them alone for a longer period of time.

If you do not have a lot of time or commitment to devote to dog behavior training, then owning a dog that is already trained may be a better option for you, because having a new puppy in home takes a lot of focus. Make sure you are willing to put forth the effort and dedication required before bringing home the animal. If you think obedience school will solve the problems, you should realize that it will help, but it needs to be reinforced at home.
