What Makes The Miniature Pinscher Dog A Great Pet?

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This
by Ned Dagostino

There’s a lot of misinformation floating around about the Miniature Pinscher. Some say this dog breed is annoying, and barks to much. Others will tell you the Min Pin is not good with children. Chances are that these are the same folks saying that Min Pins are simply small Dobermans. Of course owners of this breed know that all of those things are simply wrong.

What the Min Pin really is is an intelligent dog that is extremely loyal and intelligent, and yes, full of energy. It’s no wonder this breed has been given the nickname “The King of the Toys.”

There’s no question that this breed has a bit of an attitude. They are courageous well beyond what their 10 pounds would indicate. They seem to think they weigh much more than that. You’ll notice it in their proud walk with their high steps and head held high as well.

And because they are so loyal, proud and courageous, the Miniature Pinscher makes an excellent watchdog. But those same traits can make them difficult if not trained properly.

A good Min Pin owner quickly establishes himself as the alpha male or female. If this is not done, the dog can become a tyrant, thinking he’s in charge of the household. Early training is a must and it needs to be consistent. You can’t let your dog get away with bad behavior just because he’s so cute. It can be tough sometimes to enforce discipline because of this, but it needs to be done. The good news is that Miniature Pinschers are easy to train because they are highly intelligent.

And once he’s trained you will have everything you could want in a pet. Your Min Pin will be incredibly loyal and loving and simply a joy to be around. These dogs are real comedians and will leave you laughing every time you watch them play.

And while the Miniature Pinscher is certainly not a fragile breed, he does only weigh about 10 pounds. That means that kids can at times have a tendency to play too rough, especially since the Min Pin acts bigger than he is. Children may need to be reminded that the dog is still small.

As for loyalty, the Miniature Pinscher can and will get along with everyone in your family. But they do tend to pick one person to become extremely attached to. You’ll have a hard time finding a more loyal breed.

Because they have so much energy, Miniature Pinschers need plenty of exercise. But the good news is that if you don’t have the energy to keep up, their size means they can get all the exercise they need just running around your apartment or home. They love to play by themselves and if you’re watching, they seem to perform more just for your enjoyment. You can’t help but laugh.

And when play time is over they’ll be happy to sit there right next to you. So if you want a family pet that’s loyal, fun, smart and easy to care for, the Miniature Pinscher may be just the breed you’re looking for.

Barking dog advice for neighbors

by Jack Pointer

If you happen to live by a barking dog, there are a couple steps you can take to keep your neighborhood calm.

Try contacting the dog owner and ask them to do something about the problem. Maybe the owner is not aware of the issue and will stop the barking right away.

If this does not work, then call your local humane society. They will want the name and address of the dog owner, and they will need your name and address too. They will also want to know when the dog is disturbing people.

Usually a letter from the humane society is sent to the dog owner, and usually this letter takes care of the barking problem.

In spite of this, if the dog continues to bark, a call will have to be made to the humane society again. A complaint will most likely be issued with an officer delivering it to the dog owner.

A complaint must be signed by persons representing households within a reasonable distance of the animal owner. If the owner still does not do something to stop the barking, he may have to appear in court.

keep in mind, if your dog is doing the barking; avoid the ugliness for yourself and fellow neighbors with some reasonable dog training.

Finally, if you are end up being a neighbor of a barking dog, keep in mind that you can do something about it. Most states and counties have noise laws on the books.

Helpful Hints to Help Dog Behavior Training

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This
by Joe R. Hilliard

When it comes to dog behavior training, beyond the standard house breaking, leash training, and bark and bite training, a dog owner must be prepared to deal with excessive urination when the dog gets excited, controlling whining, and crate training.

The first priority when a new puppy is introduced into the home is house breaking the puppy. This is not something that can be rushed, because the more the issue is pushed, the less results you are likely to see. Designate a certain area for papers, gradually reducing that area as you increase the frequency of trips outside and watch for signs from the puppy. Bladder control is learned over time, and you must be patient.

For leash training, you’ll want to quickly let the dog know that you are in control of the leash, or the puppy will try to take advantage of the situation. When he or she goes to a place you do not want them to go, make sure to gently pull on the leash and speak the command of your choice. It is important that your dog is leash trained with you in control for outdoor and socialization purposes.

The last thing you want to deal with is a dog that barks all time and chews or bites everything. Show the dog that this behavior is unacceptable by allowing him or her to spend time with other, older dogs. This will help because this is a task that nature would have assisted with.

When a dog whines, it is perhaps one of the most annoying sounds for a human. Teaching a dog to control this will help for a better, happier, coexistence as the dog ages. It is a problem that needs to be addressed quickly and handled firmly. Trust the dog to be alone and quiet for short periods of time and reward this before leaving him or her alone for any extended period of time. This is because the whining generally is a result of being away from the family.

The sooner you can get the dog’s whining under control the better for everyone. The dog probably whines because he or she does not want to be away from you, so before you go away for long periods of time be sure to give puppy time to adjust and reward small periods of alone, quiet time before pushing the long ones.

Whining is something dogs love to do and their owners hate to hear. It is usually the result of separation anxiety from the family and his or her loved ones. The way to combat this is to train your dog to be left alone and quiet for short periods of time before leaving them alone for a longer period of time.

If you do not have a lot of time or commitment to devote to dog behavior training, then owning a dog that is already trained may be a better option for you, because having a new puppy in home takes a lot of focus. Make sure you are willing to put forth the effort and dedication required before bringing home the animal. If you think obedience school will solve the problems, you should realize that it will help, but it needs to be reinforced at home.

Training A Brand New Puppy

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This
by Tim Sockes

If you are the owner of a new puppy, best wishes to you! You can expect to enjoy yourself but it can be discouraging at the same time. At one moment, you are grinning at him for being so adorable, but the next moment, you want to yell at him because he broke something in your home. So when it concerns training your puppy, the quicker you accomplish this, it will be better for you.

Even though it is crucial to train your puppy quickly, you still must be patient. Let’s face reality. This is something different for the puppy to deal with. You are going to have to give him some time. He is not going to learn everything the first day when he comes to his new house.

The beginning part of the puppy training should be focused on boundaries. What can the puppy do? Where can it go? All these things have to be answered. The best way is just to simply keep an eye on him. Watch and see where he goes when he is in the house. If he walks into closet, be prepared to say “NO”. The dog will soon get a sense by your tone, and where he is in the house, as to where he can go, and where he cannot.

You should be sure to walk him often on a leash. It is not only good for physical stimulation, it also helps reinforce that he is to do his business outside. After he has relieved himself, be sure to reward him with a treat so that he knows he has learned well.

One of the most annoying situations for people with new dogs is when their dogs won’t quit barking. You desire for it to be peaceful and to have silence, but the dog feels otherwise, right? But, it is not as though the dog barks for the reason of making you mad. You have to begin to notice the dog’s barking habits.

Try really paying attention to the details. What is the cause? Is it something obvious which is attributing to the barking, or is it something subtle? Often a dog will bark when it sees someone it doesn’t really know. Dogs are naturally territorial, and will bark at a person, as if to say “back off”.

The real key to get your dog to stop barking is to simply be prepared. Know what’s the cause of it and act upon it before he starts barking. For instance, if the dog barks at the mailman, be prepared for it. You should have some idea of when your mailman delivers the mail everyday. Around that time, put a leash on your dog. When you start to see the mail car give a little tug on the leash, before he even gets a chance to bark. It’s a nice jolt to the system.

A better method is if you are outdoors, have a water pistol on hand. If you recongize what triggers your dogs barking, give him a squirt of water before he starts barking. Soon enough he will make the connection between the water and his barking. This won’t mean anything if you don’t give him a reward for not barking. There has to be positve and negative reinforcement.

Shih Tzu: Man’s Best Friend

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This
by Rebecca Simpson

The popular Shih Tzu breed has rich origins in royal Chinese history. Today’s Shih Tzu descends from dogs bred by Dowager Empress Tzu Hsi of Tibet, who rose to power in 1861 and died in 1908.

The Empress bred her dogs for traits like loyalty, good disposition, and perfect facial features. She gave Shih Tzu puppies as gifts to Chinese nobility and foreign diplomats. Tragically, when the Empress died, her successor resented the dogs and the era they represented, and many dogs were killed.

The breed first appeared in the United Kingdom during the late 1920s or early 1930s. North American soldiers who got to know the breed in Europe during World War II became fond of the little dogs and brought them back to the United States and Canada.

The Shih Tzu is a small, lightweight dog, weighing from nine to sixteen pounds. Its size makes it well suited as a lap dog and a pet for city dwellers. The dogs have been bred for centuries to provide human amusement and companionship. They are eager to please and thrive when they are the center of attention.

The dogs were bred to have a lion-like appearance, with their flattened facial muscles, bowed legs, bulging eyes, and intimidating facial expressions earning them the nickname of “lion dogs.” Their wrinkled faces were also said to resemble chrysanthemum flowers, giving rise to the breed’s second nickname of “chrysanthemum dog.”

The Shih Tzu’s coat is long and slightly wavy and requires careful daily grooming to prevent mats and tangles. The results are worth the effort, as the dog’s silky coat enhances its elegant appearance.

The dog makes an excellent family pet but is equally content to be a companion for a single owner or a couple without children. The Shih Tzu is happiest when it is the center of attention, so families with infants or very young children are advised to wait until the children are a bit older before purchasing a Shih Tzu, to avoid potential problems with jealousy.

The British Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1935, and the breed continues to be popular in the U.K. and Europe. In 2006, the Shih Tzu ranked ninth in the American Kennel Club’s rankings of breed popularity. This is a particularly remarkable accomplishment, considering that the AKC first recognized the breed in 1969. The little Shih Tzu has come a long way in the United States in just under forty years, and it is likely to continue to grow in popularity as more and more people discover what a delightful pet this breed is.

Share on TwitterSubmit to StumbleUponDigg This
by Ras Reed

There are innumerable terms that you will have to grasp in the course of training your dog. This will assist you, not only to understand your dog but it will also help you attain some measure of success. One of such terms you must acquaint yourself with is cross contextualization. Remember, your dog is a social animal and is likely to be in a lot of places where you expect it to respond to your commands easily and quickly.

What is cross contextualization? It simply refers to the process of retraining your dog using the same commands in another setting or context. Initially, you started training your dog at home in the backyard or in the park. This made your dog to respond to your commands in that particular area or spot. But when you become confident of the dog’s ability to respond swiftly to your commands, you thought that it would repeat the same anywhere you take it.

To Illustrate, you may be surprised when you take your dog to a public park and command it to sit but it could not respond. The crisis is that it has become conversant in the training at home and could not come to grasp with the new environment. In other words, your dog has not acclimatized to the new setting and therefore need you to do some retraining for it to respond to your commands.

Thence, as a dog owner you grasp that your dog can’t be curtailed to a particular place. So, to evade confusing your dog, it is highly very important for you to retrain it in any new area or location you take it to. It is desirable to list the places you will be visiting along with the dog and build your training sessions around those places or locations.

Be counseled that retraining your dog is not as testy as when you were training it the first time. In cross contextualization, all you have to do is get the dog aware of the new place. In other words, let it get used to the new place in order to respond to your commands. Furthermore, the length of time of training in the new place is steadily shorter than initial training. Now that you are aware of what cross contextualization means, it is no longer acceptable yelling at your dog when you take it to a new environment that is totally different from where you trained it to obey you. All you have to do is patiently train it in the setting you have brought it.
