Eukanuba or James wellbeloved. They both seem expensive but as they are pure nutrition then a smaller amount is sufficient so works out not too bad financially. My dogs are both rescues but now have really shiny coats that people notice.

We feed our four dogs Canidae all life stages and I truly believe it is one of the best foods because:
>it's high quality
>my dogs eat less of the food and maintain a good weight
>because they absorb more of the food they poop less
>their coats are soft and shiny
>we haven't had to deal with skin problems (dry, flaky skin, hot spots)
I give all the credit to the Canidae.

Science diet is trash, sadly most vets do not know much about dog nutrition. Most of what they "know" comes from the companies themselves, or they sell the food simply because they get money for selling it.
I fed my dog Science Diet for awhile, and then she started throwing up every day. Switched her to a vet sensitive stomach made by science diet and nothing changed. Then her allergies started to flare so I witched her to Limited Allergen Purnia didn't help.
Eventually I learned about doggy nutrition and switched to TimberWolf Organics. Her allergies no longer act up, her coat is fuller than it's ever been, and she has overall had an improvement in health.
I generally suggest people look into one of these brands:
* Artemis (Fresh Mix line)
* Blue Buffalo
* California Natural
* Canidae (If your worried about price this is generally the way to go)
* Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul (Another cheap brand)
* Eagle Pack Holistic Selects
* EVO
* Fromm
* Innova
* Merrick
* Nature's Variety
* Orijen
* Solid Gold
* Taste of the Wild
* Timberwolf Organics
* Wellness
* ZiwiPeak

Science Diet is filled with corn, and other unhealthy fillers thus people say it's trash.

I use Wellness and my dog Marley always gets complemented on her shiny coat. It's not a commercial food so you can't get it at a chain or a grocery store. Marley was given the death sentence by our Vet the same week I brought her home from the pound (November, 2006) and she is still here today! I think this is the reason I started her on Wellness from that day on. I'm a firm believer in good nutrition and I have a happy healthy dog to show for it.
